In ancient Japan, Kami — divine spirits — were believed to dwell within nature, from forests and rivers to even the sake we cherish.
One legend tells of a noble samurai, Hiroshi, who discovered a hidden shrine dedicated to a Sake Kami. Offering a cup of sake in quiet reverence, he was met by the spirit itself. Moved by his humility, the Kami bestowed upon him a unique gift — the recipe for a shochu infused with a touch of the divine.
“Kami” resonates with the Japanese word for paper, a nod to the art of origami. This connection inspired our emblem — an origami fox head, symbolising the guardian spirit that watches over the temple.
Drawing inspiration from the rich tapestry of flavors found in Kyushu’s diverse shochu distilleries, we are committed to capturing the essence of this traditional Japanese spirit in a way that resonates with modern consumers.
Kami Barley Shochu is a distinctive barley spirit, where a portion of the grain is gently roasted using tea roasters — an approach that brings a unique depth of character. Combined with carefully selected koji and yeast strains, precise fermentation, and expert distillation, it reveals a layered profile of earthy richness, with notes of coffee, cacao, and toasted bread.

The Distillery Behind Kami
Kami is crafted by Tensei Shuzo, a historic distillery in Osaki, Kagoshima — one of Japan’s most celebrated regions for traditional shochu.
Founded in 1901, the distillery brings over a century of expertise in producing honkaku shochu. Situated near Shibushi Bay, it draws on exceptionally soft underground water from the Hishida area, contributing to the spirit’s smooth and balanced character.
Production follows time-honoured Japanese techniques, including the meticulous cultivation of rice koji — the fermentation culture at the heart of shochu’s flavour.
Rooted in tradition yet driven by innovation, Tensei Shuzo embodies the craftsmanship of modern Japanese distilling — a natural partner for Kami.
